Coastal Studies

by Megan Crossin

Subject:           Geography
Grade Level:    High School
Objective:        To apply theoretical learning of coastal management to real situations
Time needed:  1 lesson for giving the assignment/initial research, additional lesson for
                         research, if desired. Otherwise, assignment can be completed outside
                         class hours.
Materials:         Access to library/Internet for research purposes. (Can be outside of
                         class time)

Instructions:

  1. If you are studying coasts, particularly coastal erosion and environmental conservation methods, get your students to put the theory to the test!
  2. Have students choose a coastal location, whether local, national, or international, as long as the student can find the required information. It could be a place where they visit regularly, vacation at, or have always wanted to go. Try to have each student choose a different location.
  3. Each student should prepare a report, including the following information:
         a. A map of the area
         b. The usages made of the area (regular and tourism)
         c. How this use impacts on the environment, both description and explanation
         d. Current environmental protection procedures
         e. Recommendations for future environmental protection plans
  4. In this assignment they should explore as thoroughly as possible the cause-effect relationship between use and damage done, as well as environmental protection methods, both current and possible future ones.
  5. There is a sample grade marking guide below, should you wish to use it.
  6. Hopefully, not only will your students get practice in the application of theory to real life situations, but they will also become more aware of environmental conservation when they visit coastal areas.

Coastal Area Investigation

Task: Students are to choose a coastal area, located anywhere in the world, and are to write up a report on the area, including the following elements:

  • A map of the area

  • Uses made of the coastal area

  • The impact of use on the coastal environment, and what it means for the future

  • Any current environmental protection procedures

  • An outline of some other possible solutions to current problems
