In the News Today

by Megan Crossin

Subject:
Social Studies

Grade Level:
For all high school levels

Objective:
To increase student awareness of day-to-day events and to accustom students to reading a daily newspaper.

Time needed:
Set over 8-12 weeks, depending on your choice, but should be done entirely (or almost entirely) outside of class time. One lesson may be devoted to explaining the assignment and having students read newspapers.

Materials:
Newspapers (if desired - optional)
Marking sheet (see below)

Instructions:
This is an assignment that can be given instead of, or in addition to, other assignments. It is an ongoing assignment that should not cover less than six weeks, but can run for as long as the teacher desired. One term is often a good length.

  1. Choose the topic/area that you wish your students to be alert for. Example: natural
disasters, environmental issues, public events. Tie the topic in with the subject you are
    studying in class.
  2. Inform students that they are to collect a certain number of articles on the topic from the daily newspapers. (One per week of the assignment is recommended. Adjust for your individual students/class, if you wish). They should look through the newspapers everyday and cut out articles they see. If they do not get a daily newspaper at home, and have no means of getting one, they may be able to read the daily newspaper in the library and photocopy relevant articles. Use your discretion. If you have regular use of a multimedia lab, or laptops/PCs in the class, you may wish to use the online daily newspapers.
  3. For each article, the students should write a small report with the following information:
         a. Topic covered in the article
         b. Date the article was published
         c. Source of the article
         d. Summary of the article
  4. If you wish to use the criteria marking sheet, copy the table as many times as required (per number of articles) and paste them all onto the same page to form a marking sheet. See the example below.
  5. The assignment should be handed in with the reports and the original articles, at the end of the assignment period.

On the marking sheet, each article is marked out of 10, with one mark available for topic, date, and source. Give 5 marks for the summary and 2 marks for the presentation because these require more work and effort. Each article is worth a maximum of 10 marks, and the total assignment marks depend on how many articles the teacher wishes to have their students collect.
